Not long ago I happened upon Derek McCrea's website, http://www.derekmccrea.50megs.com/photo3.html, and I was struck by the beautiful artwork. There are so many great themes and incredible colors that I began to wonder about how I design rooms for clients.
See, as an interior designer I typically begin designing around an inspiration piece or a basic generic framework. But what if we started a decorating project that revolved around one or several of the art pieces from this site?
I love the seaside and my husband has turned me into a great lover of lighthouses. There is a painting on this site of Cape Canaveral, let's decorate a room around that piece.
To begin I would study the art and look at the colors carefully. This piece would need to be framed correctly and hung on a wall that would have accent light shining upon it with the focus of the room being on it. Furniture placement would be imperative too.
For the walls, I would paint the majority of the walls the lighter brownish sand color. The wall this art is hanging on I would paint the buttery yellow color that can be found in the light. My upholstered furniture would be the blue from the sky. I would strongly consider using the darkest of blues in an upholstery fabric so it mimics the blue in the sky. The side pieces like coffee tables and end tables would be perfect in the off white or white washed type of color that can be found in the white of the stripe on the lighthouse.
Hard wood flooring in a deep color like the darkest sand color would really weight the room correctly and an area rug should be a stripe, like the stripe in the lighthouse, with the green from the trees, deep browns, the blues and a small twinge of yellow from the light.
My other accessories around the room would be simple seaside accessories like birds, sea grasses, woven baskets, soft blue and butter yellow pillows and candles. My lamps and lighting could be themed and be fensel lights turned into lamps or simple sand colored jars with off white shades.
I love decorating and helping people figure out the best solutions to their
design challenges. This small decorating project is exactly how I would design a
room for someone or how I would give them advice in decorating their homes. When
you are equipped with knowledge you can make every decision easily and quickly.
And then you won't fear when buying art like the pieces you can find on this
site to decorate all your rooms. Here's to all your happy decorating
projects!
